As I am a pensioner, disabled and on the Priority register, I decided to accept the £100 Tesco offer and get smart meters fitted as getting down onto my knees each month was a struggle.
These were fitted on the 6th Sept and by lunch completed. That evening. I checked on the monitor and it was registering as £5 used. Getting down on my knees I found the monitor was right and it too said £5.
By the morning it was at £10 and even with all gas off was still climbing. After several calls it was arranged for a Utilita engineer to call on the Thursday 8th. The meter was showing £20 by now, more than one months gas usage for me.
After several gas checks he noted and took photographic evidence that the meter was still climbing with the tap turned off. He made several phone calls (to Tech dept?) and told me that the meter was not faulty but the technology was. He told me to keep checking my monitor as the tech side could correct the problem their end. I was also put at ease that the incorrect total would be cancelled and the meter set to zero.
With no updates and the meter still climbing, I called Customer care on Monday 12th and after explaining over and over I was told there was no fault. I asked if an engineer could call on me and was told no.
I decided that if the meter was still rising, there may after all be a gas leak. I called Northern Gas Networks who attended and also noted meter rising but no leak, but to be sure they removed the meter and placed on my kitchen worktop. The took a reading at 10 minute interval, with photographic evidence, which showed the readings increasing.
I contacted them to day emailed the report from the engineer. They will not accept the written evidence or photographs taken as proof..
My last 3 months gas usage has been £12.65, £15.79 and £16.30.
The gas cost since last Tuesday is monitoring at £86.32 and very strangely is at 143.4 Kwh for Sun, Mon, Tues and Wed. Even I can see that to have four days exactly the same would be unheard of. You would think that would flag up!
No way on my state pension can I afford to pay £300 per month till sorted. I have had to submit as a complaint before I can get Ofgem involved. Two questions (1. do I cancel my d/d (2. how long do I wait before getting Ofgem involved.
