Here’s how to prepare your home for the darker months while saving £££££! 👇
Clear the gutters
Fallen leaves will make your drainpipes prone to blockages. This can lead to water overflowing and running down your walls causing damp inside your home. Taking this small step will prevent the need to fork out on potential damp treatments in the future.
Give your heating a check
A quick test run to see all the radiators are running fine ahead of winter is a good idea! By ensuring they’re heating up fully will mean you’re getting the most out of your central heating and spend in the colder months. If they are failing to heat in some places, try bleeding them to maximise efficiency.
Invest in a draft block
A draft block helps to insulate your home. If you don’t know what they look like, you’ll soon recognise it (the long soft toy-like barriers that go at the bottom of your internal doors). You can get these in all good homeware and DIY stores, which have some weird and wonderful ranges to choose from. Using one could save you £25 to £50 per year on your energy spend.
Keep the spiders away
As the weather starts to get cold, spiders will be looking for a warmer environment (our homes!) To keep the numbers at bay – place a conker in the corners of each room. Conker's are thought to contain a noxious chemical that repels our eight legged friends. They are also thought to hate the smell of peppermint oil. Spray it in all the entrances of your home and they may just stay away!
Check over your roof
Missing, broken or loose roof tiles can result in leaks and damp spots as the weather gets colder, which will cause damage your home in the long run, so be sure to check it over.
Service your boiler
Have you had your boiler serviced recently? Your boiler goes through extra strain in the winter months. If it breaks down, you’ll be faced with a very cold home and a potentially long wait for a repair during this busy winter period!
Re-programme your thermostat
Setting your thermostat to work around you will save you money and be more convenient. You can program it to come on before you wake up and turn off when you leave the house, so you’re not spending a small fortune having it on all day, every day.
