I was on communal gas before I moved into my bungalow. Any tips on reducing consumption? All I have is central heating and hot water on the same system. I wanted to turn the gas off at the meter but the bungalow has been empty for months and gets cold at night.

Moving from a communal heating setup can take a bit of getting used to. If the bungalow was standing empty and gets cold overnight, it may be better to keep the heating at a low background temperature rather than switching the gas off completely, as this can help prevent damp, condensation and frozen pipes as winter approaches.

To help keep gas use down, you could:

• Turn the thermostat down by a degree or two if comfortable.
• Use your heating timer so it's only running when needed.
• Turn radiator valves down in rooms you don't use regularly.
