We know that at this time of the year, your bills can be higher than they are usually. We also want to make sure they are as clear as possible. In this post I want to take you through how our bills are set up , what to look for, and how you can check that your bills are correct!

    PAGE ONE – OVERVIEW

This is the front page of your bill. It highlights the key details you need:

    • The address we supply energy to
    • Your account number
    • The bill date
    • The period you’re being billed for
If a previous bill was estimated and we later receive an accurate meter reading, your billing period may be longer than usual. When this happens, we rebill your account to make sure you only pay for the energy you’ve actually used.

Here you’ll see what you’ve spent during the billing period.

    • If you have both gas and electricity with us, both will show here
    • It confirms how you pay (e.g., Direct Debit)
    • It lists any payments you made during this period
    • Finally, it shows your overall balance — whether you’re in credit or debit

This section breaks down the tariff you are on. You’ll find:

    • Your tariff name
    • Your payment method
    • Contract end date (for some commercial tariffs)
    • Your annual energy consumption for the last 12 months
This annual usage helps you compare your consumption with national averages or similar households. If you also have gas with us, those details will appear here too.

    We offer different payment options:

    • Direct Debit (the most common)
    • Pay on receipt of bill, either:
      • By bank transfer, using the details and unique reference provided
      • Using a BillPay card, allowing payment online, by phone or at a PayPoint location
You’ll also find important emergency contacts here, such as who to call for a power cut or if you smell gas.

This page goes into detail about how your bill is calculated. It includes:

    • Your Meter Serial Number (MSN) – the physical meter ID
    • Your MPAN (electricity) or MPRN (gas) – the meter’s unique location reference
You’ll see your meter readings, the date they were taken, and whether they were:

    • E – Estimated
    • C – Customer reading
    • R – Routine/Automatic
If you spot an estimated reading, please send us an up‑to‑date meter reading to ensure accurate billing.
Every three months you’ll also notice a “Check Reading” on the 1st of January, March, July, and October when prices change. These are normal.
Below the readings, you'll find the calculation of your bill:
Energy used × unit rate + standing charges + 5% VAT.

PAGE FOUR – TERMS & CONDITIONS

The final page contains important information such as:

    • Moving home
    • Managing account debt
    • Details about the Priority Services Register
    • The Direct Debit Guarantee
…and other key terms relating to your energy account.
Thanks for reading! I hope this has been useful and interesting for you, please let me know if you have any questions at all, and I’ll be happy to answer them! We’d also love to hear about what else you’d like us to do a deep dive on – what can we do to make navigating the energy industry easier for you? Let us know in the comments!
