Bonfire night can be fun, but we need to look after ourselves and loved ones, including our 4 legged friends.
If you can go to a large public event this is generally safer and less harmful to the environment.

    The Bonfire:

    • Choose a safe open area – clear the ground away from buildings, trees, fences and dry leaves.
    • Build the bonfire properly - Make sure its an appropriate size for the area available.
    • Before lighting check the stack for any wild animals.
    • Don’t use liquid flammables to light – like petrol. Do have buckets of water or a hosepipe ready in case the fire gets out of control.
    • At the end of the night make sure the bonfire is dampened down completely before leaving it.
    • Never leave the bonfire unattended, make sure one person is always supervising it.
    • Make sure everyone stands a safe distance from the fire.

    Fireworks:

    • Only adults should light the fireworks in a safe place away from the rest of the party and should not drink alcohol while lighting fireworks.
    • Light them from a safe distance using a taper to light them, then stand well back.
    • Never try to relight dud fireworks, instead douse them down with water.
    • If you have fireworks in the garden, make sure they are supervised
    • Sparklers: Who doesn’t love a sparkler – they do get very hot – wear a long sleeve coat and gloves. Make sure any long hair is tied back.
    • When the sparkler is alight hold at arm’s length, at the end put the sparkler is out in a bucket of sand or water.

    Pets:

It’s a scary time for them due to the bright lights and loud noises. Keep them in the house and keep windows and blinds closed and leave the TV or radio on to disguise the fireworks noise.
