I hope everyone is well and not too flustered with the Christmas prepping? 🎄😬
With so much on this time of year, it can be hard to remember those things around the house that are important to check now the weather is dramatically dropping! ❄
Here is your reminder to check your exterior tap (if you have one).
As sub-zero temperatures are now being experienced/forecast, the likelihood of potential pipe freeze becomes a possibility! Therefore it should be isolated internally to prevent any potential of the pipework freezing, and leading to interior leaks.
Please note, this is 'general advice' and therefore, if you are unsure about anything, professional advice from a professional industry approved body is to be taken.
To isolate the exterior tap (in the majority of cases where the tap itself sticks out of the brickwork and most of the pipe is behind the brick work), the isolating valve/tap is installed within the sink base unit. With this being the case in your home, you just need to switch the valve/pipe to the off position. Once isolated, go to the exterior tap and turn on to remove any water that may remain within the pipework. For the period of isolation, it's advised to leave the tap in the open position.
If you do not have the ability to turn your exterior tap off from the inside of your home, it is advised to get pipe insulation covers/coats, which can be purchased from any well known home and DIY store. These wrap around the body of the exposed pipe that loads up to the tap part - and usually are a foam texture.
